THE JOURNAL Wednesday, Aug, 21, 2013 11 r Motivatin the under- achieving I am a parent. I am an educator. I am the mother of a very bright, formerly under-achieving student who frustrated every teacher (but one) who taught him K-12. I quickly learned that logic, inspiring speeches, pleas, rewards, bribes, threats, taking away privileges, and grounding him did not work. He was not motivated to do his homework, much less turn it in. His daily grades consisted of an above-average number of zeros. ~I received at least one phone call a week from a teacher telling me that I had to do "something" about my son's grades. None of them defined "something." I was at a loss and so were they, yet I knew my son was learning. He scored 100 on every test, and that frustrated the teachers more than anything. It wasn't until recently that my son shared that he had been bored and not doing his homework had become a game. We had been pawns. His game cost our family a lot of anguish, a lot of money in unearned scholarships, and a lot of tuition wasted because he changed career directions. Even though standardized test scores earned him a desk in the gifted program, his report card prevented his participation. While I considered myself a wonderful mother, I failed my son. I was young and not mature enough to realize that I needed to establish the importance of his being truthful with himself and me about his schoolwork. I didn't understand the importance of teaching him to set very specific long-term and short-term goals. I didn't understand the importance of helping him to complete a task analysis for each goal. I didn't understand the importance of defining success and failure in terms of his commitment to achieving his goals. He eventually learned those skills: He graduated from college on the six-year plan summa cum laude, he is employed and happy, and he and his wife are parents of a newborn son. Our talks have helped me become a better educator. He has given me insight into how the adolescent mind thinks. He has cemented in me the conviction that career planning must begin in middle school. Most importantly, he has taught me the important role a caring, compassionate teacher has in the life of a (sometimes rebellious) student. Remember the one teacher who never became frustrated with him? To this day she remains his favorite teacher, and they keep in contact via Facebook. How was she different? She would accept nothing less than 100 percent from h m. She challenged and empowered him to achieve beyond where he thought he could go. She ignited in him a passion for theatre arts, and she taught him to celebrate success. Carolyn Berry is the director of the Virginia Center for Learning and Achievement LLC in King George.
