:olonial Beach Rescue
00,quad Inducts Officers
by L. Coates
Describing the job of rescue
workers as persons who "lay down
their lives for others," Kevin Dil-
lard applauded the efforts of the
members of the Colonial Beach
Rescue Squad. Dillard, vice-presi-
dent of the 1Oth District Virginia
Association of Volunteer Rescue
Sauads, was guest speaker at the
ltal installation of officers and
awards ceremony held by the local
squad this past Saturday night.
Dillard, also a member of the
Fredericksburg Rescue Squad,
gave a brief history of the start of
the volunteer effort that began in
Virginia some 60 years ago. He
also made predictions that as
improvements in technology and
equipment were made in the
1990's, so would the dedication
of the volunteer workers in Colo-
nial Beach.
During this special ceremony,
the 1990 officers were installed.

The Ladies Auxiliary presented
an impressive $3000 check to the
Rescue Squad as part of their
contribution to the total squad
effort.
Life membership awards in the
auxiliary were presented to Arbu-
tus Sanford and Betty Rice.
Two auxiliary awards were
presented in memory of two very
special, long-time auxiliary

Laura Reamy Service award,
chosen by secret ballot, was pre-
sented to Winnifred Frank.
A special presentation was made
to Miss Karen Staples in apprecia-
tion for her work as Miss Colonial
Beach Rescue Squad.
Special mention was made on
behalf of Tommy Salenger. Sa-
lenger is the only remaining char-
ter member of the Colonial Beach
Rescue Squad. The squad was
organized on March 14, 1950. A
laundry truck was used as the first
ambulance and a cot served as a
stretcher.
Today the CBRS has their own
building, several ambulances- one
of which is equipped with Ad-
vanced Life Support equipment, 1
crash truck and 2 boats. They are
manned by a dedicated group of
individuals who sacrifice their
time, energy, health and welfare
to help others in need.
